Today's Spark, safe words might feel good, but they're keeping your brand stuck in the middle of the pack. Let's talk about why playing it safe is actually the real risk. Welcome back to Morning Cup of Brand Spark. Today is Monday, June 16th, and I'm Gina Dunn, founder and brand strategist of OG Solutions. Today's Spark is a call out for anyone who's ever played it safe in their messaging.
and wondered why it's just not clicking with anyone. So let's spark it up. Here's what I see happen again and again. Founders playing it safe with their words, sticking to what sounds professional or what sounds appropriate. Afraid to say the real thing they believe in because what if someone disagrees? Look, I totally get it. I've been there. I've been there a lot.
I used to think if I just used the right words, it would land, I would land, every client. But here's the truth. The more I tried to fit in, the less I actually stood out. Safe words are like a security blanket. They're comfortable. But they're also the reason your brand feels like everyone else. I want to share a quick story from a project I worked on last year. A client came to me with a brand that was technically perfect.
The visuals were great, the website copy was polished, but when I read it, it was all bland, like really generic. It was like any other coach out there. And when we got on the phone, she admitted she was terrified to say what she really believed in because she thought it maybe felt a little too edgy, maybe even skewing to the unprofessional. And here's what I told her. The words you're scared to say,
They're probably the exact words that would make someone lean into you. Because the truth is, people don't remember safe. They remember real. They remember the message that made them feel something, even if it was maybe a little bit uncomfortable. Within reason, of course. So here's your spark for today. The safe words that feel comfortable are the exact ones that keep you small. So if your brand's feeling stuck,
Ask yourself, what's the one thing you'd say if you weren't worried about sounding correct? What's the real idea that's been on your mind, but you keep editing it out? Because that's what people connect with. That's the spark that sets you apart from the pack. And here's your spark check for today. Spark one, what's one word or phrase that you've been using that feels safe, but it isn't really you?
Spark two, where are you editing out your real opinion or your real story because it feels like it might be too much? And spark three, how would your brand, and spark three, what would your brand say if it stopped trying to be liked and started trying to be real? So that's your spark for today. Safe words might feel easy, but they'll keep your brand stuck in the middle.
So here's your weekly challenge. Share one bold, unfiltered line about your work this week. Put it out there, even if it makes you a tiny bit nervous. Tag me on LinkedIn or Instagram, or DM me if you want to keep it private. I want to see you show up real. Catch you tomorrow.

Frequently asked
According to brand strategist Gina Dunn, safe messaging makes your brand feel like everyone else. When founders stick to what sounds 'professional' or 'appropriate,' they produce polished but generic content that fails to connect. The more you try to fit in with conventional language, the less you actually stand out — making safe words the real risk to brand growth.
Gina Dunn recommends asking yourself: 'What's the one thing I'd say if I weren't worried about sounding correct?' The ideas you keep editing out — the ones that feel slightly too edgy or unprofessional — are often exactly what audiences connect with. Real, specific, opinionated language makes people feel something, and that emotional response is what makes a brand memorable.
Gina Dunn suggests three diagnostic questions: Is there a word or phrase you're using that feels safe but isn't really you? Are you editing out your real opinion because it feels like too much? Would your brand say something different if it stopped trying to be liked? If any of these resonate, your messaging is likely too cautious to build a distinct brand.
Yes — Gina Dunn acknowledges the concern 'within reason,' noting that fear of sounding unprofessional is what drives founders toward bland, generic copy. She worked with a client whose technically perfect website was indistinguishable from other coaches because she softened her real beliefs. The goal is authenticity over edginess — saying what you genuinely believe, not performing controversy.
