Today's Spark, strategy isn't sexy, it's gritty, honest work. Let's talk about the hidden truth behind brand strategy that not everyone says out loud. Welcome back to Morning Cup of Brand Spark. Today is Sunday, June 15th, and I'm Gina Dunn, founder and brand strategist of OG Solutions. What's today's spark? Well, it's the unglamorous real talk about brand strategy.

why it matters, why it's messy, and why it's the only thing that'll make your brand actually work. Let's spark it up. Here's something that not everyone will tell you. Strategy doesn't happen in a mood board. It doesn't happen in a perfectly curated visual template. It happens when you're willing to get brutally honest about what you're here to do and who you're really talking to.

I've had clients come to me with endless pages of quote unquote strategy. And honestly, oftentimes the words sound great and the visuals look expensive. But when I asked them what they actually believed in or what they'd fight for or what connected to them about that strategy, the room got quiet. And that's because real strategy, it's actually about really hard questions.

These questions will make you squirm. These are questions that force you to stop performing and start owning in your core. Strategy isn't easy and it's often not clean, but it's the difference between a brand that exists and a brand that changes the game. Let me share something about my own journey. For years, I thought strategy was just another word for the plan that I made before the visuals.

I would write down all the basics, the who, the what, the why, I ticked the boxes, and then I would jump straight into the pretty part, the design. But here's what happened. I would end up second guessing everything, rewriting headlines, changing my tagline, constantly refreshing my visuals because something just never felt fully right to me. And the real shift happened when I realized it wasn't that my visuals were offed.

It was that my strategy was safe and it wasn't really me. I hadn't gotten to the core of what made me different, the heart of my brand. I had not yet asked myself, what do I really stand for even if it's polarizing? What truth do I believe so deeply in that I would fight for it even if it's not on trend? And that's the messy magic.

That's what no one really wants to talk about because it's not the sexy part about branding. When you think about branding, you think about a logo. But that's where the brand goes from fine to f-yes. So let's break it down a bit. If your strategy doesn't make you feel a little tiny bit vulnerable, if it doesn't make you rethink how you're showing up, it's not really a strategy. It's just a fancy design.

with fancy words. It doesn't have a backbone. Because here's the thing. The best brands are not built on perfection. They're actually built on conviction. So here's your spark. Strategy isn't about looking good. It's about being clear, even when it's uncomfortable. So if you're feeling stuck or you're feeling scattered, do not ask yourself.

Would this make me? Don't ask what would make this look better. Ask what would make this feel real to me? Because when it real because when it feels real for you, that's when it'll resonate with the right people and repel the ones who were never best fit for you in the first place. So here's your spark check today. Spark one. Where have you been hiding behind pretty?

because their real questions feel hard. Spark two, what's one belief about your brand that you've been afraid to say out loud? And spark three, if you stripped away all the extras, what's the heart of what you do? What's your why?

Gina Dunn04:42

And that's your spark for today. Real strategy isn't always sexy, but it's the one thing that will stick and last the test of time with your business. It's your legacy. If you're ready to see what's actually holding your brand back, grab the DIY Brand Glow-Up Audit Toolkit. It's a self-led deep dive that'll show you exactly where your gaps are and what steps you should take first to fix the most important.

The link's in the show notes, because this work, it's where the real brand magic lives. Catch you tomorrow.

Key takeaways & FAQ

Five things to steal

  1. 01 Real brand strategy demands brutal honesty about what you actually stand for.
  2. 02 Constantly refreshing visuals signals a strategy problem, not a design problem.
  3. 03 Conviction, not perfection, is the foundation every lasting brand is built on.
  4. 04 Ask 'what makes this feel real?' before asking 'what makes this look better?'
  5. 05 A strategy that doesn't make you feel vulnerable probably lacks a backbone.

Frequently asked

Brand strategy feels messy because it requires getting brutally honest about what you truly stand for — including beliefs that may be polarizing or not on trend. According to Gina Dunn, real strategy forces you to stop performing and start owning your core convictions, which means asking hard questions most people prefer to avoid.

Real brand strategy has conviction at its core — it's about being clear even when it's uncomfortable. A surface-level strategy may have polished words and expensive visuals, but if the people behind it can't explain what they'd fight for or what they truly believe, it lacks backbone and won't hold up over time.

A key sign your brand strategy is failing is constantly second-guessing your visuals — rewriting headlines, changing your tagline, and refreshing your look without relief. Gina Dunn experienced this firsthand and discovered the root cause wasn't the design; it was that her strategy was safe and didn't reflect who she truly was.

Gina Dunn suggests three core questions: Where have you been hiding behind pretty visuals because the real questions feel too hard? What's one belief about your brand you've been afraid to say out loud? And if you stripped away all the extras, what is the heart of what you do — your true why?
