Today's Spark is a no BS reminder that design can be gorgeous, but it's strategy that actually sells. So let's break the myth and find out what makes your brand truly stick. Welcome back to Morning Cup of Brand Spark. Today is Monday, June 9th, and I'm Gina Dunn, founder and brand strategist of OG Solutions. Today's Spark, it's about the eternal debate, strategy versus pretty.

and why getting them backwards keeps brands stuck in meh mode. So let's spark it up. Here's the spicy truth. Pretty brands are literally everywhere, but truly powerful brands are rare. Pretty brands have all the right visuals. They look sleek, modern or polished. But powerful brands, they have a strategy. They have a backbone.

and they have a story to tell. They know who they're talking to, why it matters to them, and they know what they're here to say. I've seen it time and time again. The founder who hires a top designer before they figured out what they actually do. The business owner who pours money into visuals, but never into the strategy and clarity of their business.

And I've seen the endless design tweaks on Canva while the messaging stays fuzzy and complicated. And guess what? Pretty might get you some likes, but strategy is what's going to get you paid and booked. So here's a stat that backs this up. A 2024 Edelman Trust Barometer report found that

67 % of buyers say trusting a brand's voice and values matters more than how slick their website looks. How does this translate to us? Well, if your brand doesn't feel like it's speaking the truth, no design can save it. So here's the spark today. Pretty is a moment. Strategy, strategy is a movement. When you lead with strategy,

Your design choices actually make sense. You're not just decorating a cake. You're building the foundation of something that works. You're making every single pixel earn its place. So if you're feeling stuck, or you're second guessing every design choice you're making, pause, take a step back, and then ask yourself, what's the bigger picture here?

What's the story I'm really telling? Because once you have that, the rest gets a hell of a lot easier. So here's your spark check today. Spark one, what part of your brand feels polished but doesn't say anything? Spark two, if someone stripped away the visuals, would the strategy still stand on its own?

And three, what's the one core idea that your brand, it can't exist without?

So that's your spark for today. Strategy first, design second, always. And this week I have a challenge for you. Share one thing you're working on behind the scenes, your real message, your real mission. Tag me or shoot me a DM. I want to see the brains behind the brand. And if you're craving spicy talk about how to actually make your strategy stick, come and hang out with me and Natalie on the branded AF video podcast on all your favorite platforms out there. That one, it's surely a ride, but listen with headphones because it's quite explicit. I'll catch you tomorrow.

Key takeaways & FAQ

Five things to steal

  1. 01 Strategy is what gets you paid; pretty visuals only get you likes.
  2. 02 Build brand strategy before hiring a designer or investing in visuals.
  3. 03 Every design choice becomes purposeful only after strategy is established.
  4. 04 Buyers trust a brand's voice and values more than slick website aesthetics.
  5. 05 Strip away the visuals — if strategy can't stand alone, fix strategy first.

Frequently asked

According to brand strategist Gina Dunn, pretty brands are everywhere but powerful brands are rare because they have a backbone and a story. Design without strategy produces visuals that look polished but say nothing. Strategy defines who you're talking to, why it matters, and what you're there to say — making every design choice purposeful rather than decorative.

Gina Dunn identifies the most common mistake as hiring a top designer or pouring money into visuals before figuring out what the business actually does or clarifying its messaging. She also points to endless design tweaks in tools like Canva while the core messaging stays fuzzy — a pattern that keeps brands stuck in what she calls 'meh mode.'

A 2024 Edelman Trust Barometer report cited in this episode found that 67% of buyers say trusting a brand's voice and values matters more than how slick their website looks. The takeaway: if a brand doesn't feel like it's speaking the truth, no amount of polished design can save it.

Gina Dunn suggests a simple test: strip away all the visuals and ask whether the strategy still stands on its own. She also recommends asking what part of your brand feels polished but doesn't actually say anything, and identifying the one core idea your brand cannot exist without. If those answers are unclear, strategy work comes first.
