Hey, welcome back to Morning Cup of Brand Spark. Today is Monday, May 19th, and I'm Gina Dunn, founder of OG Solutions. We're closing out this week with a little tough love and a lot of clarity. Because if your referrals are drying up, it's not just because of your results. It's about how easy it is to remember you. And let's fix that. Let's spark it up. All right, let's get honest now.

You've got the goods. You do amazing work. Your clients love you, but they're not referring you consistently. So what gives? It's not because they're shady and it's not because you suck. It's because your brand isn't sticky enough to recall when it matters. So here's your spark. Referrals are built on recall. A brand recall comes from consistency. It comes from clarity and it comes from memorability.

People need to know exactly what you do. They need to feel confident in recommending you. And they need to remember how to describe you in one single sharp sentence. And if you're not giving them these words, they're not spreading the word for you. So here are three things that are killing your referrals right now. Number one, you're too broad. If your brand promise is, I help people get unstuck,

Well, nobody knows what to say about you. Number two, if your visuals and voice are not aligned, if you're smart on calls, but your feed is generic and vague, people just can't connect the dots. And three, you haven't reminded your clients to actually refer you. If you know, you know, people don't refer the best. They refer the clearest and the ones top of mind most.

So here's a client story of mine.

Gina Dunn02:03

My client was getting amazing testimonials, but zero leads from word of mouth. We cleaned up her messaging, built a sticky one-liner and gave her past clients the exact language to use when referring her and asking for those referrals. So she didn't actually get any better. She just got more clear and also in her ask and referrals started coming in because she asked for them. And because she was clear.

and how to refer. So here's your Spark check. One, could your clients easily explain what you do in one sentence? Spark two, have you made your services referable, not just valuable? And Spark three, does your brand show up consistently enough that people remember you when the opportunity knocks? Really think about these three things.

So if this episode made you realize your brand might be clear to you, but a bit foggy to everyone else, you can grab my DIY brand glow up audit. It's a self-guided clarity checkup that helps you spot where you're memorable and where you might be falling flat. Don't be forgettable. So that's your spark for today. Referrals aren't about being the best. They're about being remembered. And I really want to emphasize this as well.

You won't get referrals very often if you don't actually ask and give a process for that as well. So don't be afraid to ask for them.

Next week, we're cracking open offer week, how to price, how to package and how to position what you sell. So that's irresistible, even in a crowded space, make sure you follow so you don't miss a single spark and share this episode with your biz bestie. Who's always saying my referrals are a bit slow right now. So let's fix it. Talk soon.

Key takeaways & FAQ

Five things to steal

  1. 01 Referrals dry up because your brand isn't memorable enough to recall, not because your work is bad.
  2. 02 Give clients a single sharp sentence to describe you — they refer the clearest, not the best.
  3. 03 Misaligned visuals and voice disconnect your brand, making it harder for clients to recommend you.
  4. 04 Ask for referrals directly and provide the exact language clients should use when referring you.
  5. 05 Build a sticky one-liner and consistent brand presence so you stay top of mind when opportunity knocks.

Frequently asked

According to brand strategist Gina Dunn, clients often fail to refer you not because of poor results but because your brand isn't sticky enough to recall when it matters. If people can't describe what you do in one clear sentence, they won't spread the word. Referrals depend on clarity, consistency, and memorability — not just the quality of your services.

Gina Dunn recommends three steps: clarify your brand messaging with a tight one-liner, ensure your visuals and voice are aligned so clients can connect the dots, and proactively ask past clients for referrals while giving them the exact language to use. Her client went from zero word-of-mouth leads to consistent referrals simply by getting clearer and asking directly.

A sticky one-liner is a single sharp sentence that clearly explains what you do, making it easy for others to repeat when recommending you. Gina Dunn explains that vague brand promises like 'I help people get unstuck' leave people unsure what to say about you. A clear, memorable one-liner gives your clients the words they need to confidently refer you to others.

The DIY brand glow up audit is a self-guided clarity checkup created by Gina Dunn of OG Solutions. It helps business owners identify where their brand is memorable and where it may be falling flat or unclear to potential clients and referral sources. It is designed for those who realize their brand might be clear to themselves but foggy to everyone else.
