Today's Spark, a truth bomb. Pretty alone just doesn't sell. And if your brand is stuck in the make it pretty trap, it's time to fix the real problem. Let's brand backbones and not just design. Welcome back to Morning Cup of Brand Spark. Today is Tuesday, June 3rd, and I'm Gina Dunn, founder of OG Solutions. Today's Spark is a call out for anyone stuck in the pretty loop.

where design might look good, but something still feels off. Let's spark it up. So let's be real. I love a good brand glow up. Polished visuals, typography that sings, colors that feel like a full body yes. But here's the thing. I see way too many founders using design as a cover up for confusion.

Pretty alone, it just doesn't sell and it doesn't convert by itself. And it sure as hell doesn't make people remember you. When I first started building brands, I thought if I just made it look good, the rest would sort of figure itself out. But that's not how it works. When you don't have a message that hits or a strategy that really feels like you, the most gorgeous website in the world just won't save you.

It won't get you conversions or sales. So here's what most people get wrong. Most people think their brand is off because of something visual, the fonts, a color palette, or the logo, something like that. But you know what? Nine out of 10 times, it's not at all about what it looks like. It's about what it means. Because the truth is, a brand is a backbone. Design is the outfit.

It's step six and not step one. I've seen it again and again, a founder with a killer visual identity or a killer personal brand even. But when you ask them what they do, there's crickets or worse, a beautiful, perfectly designed brand that sounds just like everyone else in their space. So that's the difference between a pretty brand and a powerful brand.

Gina Dunn02:26

Pretty blends in. Powerful brands make people feel something. You've heard me say this before. A pretty brand might get clicks, but a powerful brand will build loyalty. It will build trust and it will build that, holy crap, I need this reaction. So today's spark is quite simple. Stop hiding behind the pretty and start owning the real.

So here's your spark for today. Pretty without a backbone is just a visual spiral in disguise. And you know what? I really do get it. Design is easier to tweak. It's easier to change a color than to answer a hard question about what you really stand for or what you do. But that's exactly where the clarity lives. So here's your spark check for today. Spark one.

If I stripped away your logo, your colors, would your brand still make sense? And spark too.

Where are you tweaking visuals where you should actually be clarifying your voice instead? And Spark 3. What's one truth about your brand that's scary, but's actually real?

So that's your spark for today. Pretty alone, it just won't save you. But clarity, clarity will always win. So if you're feeling stuck in the design loop, you can grab my Glowup Brand Audit. It's a self-guided toolkit for you that helps you find the real backbone of your brand. The link is in the show notes. And if this spark sparked something with you, share it with someone else who you know.

Key takeaways & FAQ

Five things to steal

  1. 01 Design is step six, not step one — strategy and message come first.
  2. 02 Pretty brands get clicks, but powerful brands build loyalty and trust.
  3. 03 Changing colors is easier than answering hard questions about your brand's purpose.
  4. 04 If removing your logo kills your brand, you have a clarity problem, not a design problem.
  5. 05 Clarity always wins over aesthetics when it comes to conversions and sales.

Frequently asked

According to brand strategist Gina Dunn, pretty visuals alone don't convert because design is just the 'outfit' — the brand's backbone is its message and strategy. Without a clear message that resonates, even the most gorgeous website won't generate sales. Nine out of ten brand problems aren't about visuals at all; they're about what the brand actually means.

A pretty brand blends in with competitors and may get clicks, but a powerful brand makes people feel something and earns loyalty and trust. Gina Dunn describes the 'holy crap, I need this' reaction as the hallmark of a powerful brand — something clarity and authentic messaging create, not polished fonts or color palettes.

Gina Dunn offers three self-check questions: Would your brand still make sense if you stripped away your logo and colors? Are you tweaking visuals when you should be clarifying your voice? And is there a truth about your brand that feels scary but is actually real? If those questions feel hard to answer, the issue is clarity, not aesthetics.

The 'brand backbone' is Gina Dunn's term for the strategic and messaging foundation beneath a brand's visuals. She argues that design is just the outfit covering that backbone. Founders who focus only on visual identity — without a distinct message or clear positioning — often end up with beautiful brands that sound exactly like every competitor in their space.
