Today's Spark, why brutal clarity isn't just about messaging. It's the lifeline of every brand that actually converts. Welcome back to Morning Cup of Brand Spark. Today is Wednesday, June 11th, and I'm Gina Dunn, founder and brand strategist of OG Solutions. Today's Spark is about something I live by, brutal clarity, and why it's the only thing that cuts through the noise today.
So let's spark it up. Here's what most people won't tell you about branding.
It's not about making your message palatable.
It's about making it impossible to ignore. Brutal clarity means stripping away everything that doesn't serve the story. It means being willing to say, this is what I believe, this is who I am for, this is who I am for, and this is what I am not here to do. It's not about being harsh for the sake of it. Don't forget that.
It's about being real enough that your people can actually find you and connect to you. Let me tell you a quick real world example. Maybe you remember this, but there was one point that Patagonia ran an ad that literally said, quote, don't buy this jacket. Do you remember that? It was bold. It was quite weird, but it was actually a hundred percent on brand because their mission
was about sustainability and using less, not more. And it worked. Their sales spiked 30 % after that campaign. Do you know why? It's because brutal clarity doesn't confuse people. It aligns them. And here's the truth. Your brand can't afford to be vague. Vague brands don't convert. They don't get remembered.
They blend in and they then they disappear compared to everything else. Today is noisier than ever out there. Brutal clarity isn't about being mean. It's about being willing to say the one thing that no one else will. The one thing that actually only you can say. So here's your spark today. Brutal clarity.
is the difference between blending in and being unforgettable. So if your brand feels scattered or it feels safe, just get honest and strip it down. Say the thing that's been on your mind, the thing that might feel a tiny bit risky, but it's really true and it's really you. And here's your spark check. Spark one. Where are you watering down your message?
out of fear. Spark 2. What's the most honest thing you could say about what you do? And Spark 3. How would your brand show up if you let it be bold as you?
And that's your spark for today. If you're tired of safe and ready for real, then let's connect. Come and find me on LinkedIn. It's Gina Dunn on LinkedIn. Drop me a message, tell me what's hitting you right now, and let's keep this conversation going. Because brutal clarity, it gets a lot easier when you're not doing it alone, guys. I'll catch you tomorrow.

Frequently asked
Brutal clarity means stripping away everything that doesn't serve your brand's story and being willing to state exactly what you believe, who you're for, and what you're not there to do. According to brand strategist Gina Dunn, it's not about being harsh — it's about being real enough that your ideal audience can actually find and connect with you.
Vague brands don't convert and don't get remembered. In today's noisy landscape, a brand that softens its message out of fear blends in with everything else and eventually disappears. Brutal clarity, by contrast, aligns people rather than confusing them — making it far more likely that the right audience will recognize and choose your brand.
Patagonia's bold 'Don't Buy This Jacket' ad, which encouraged consumers to buy less in line with the brand's sustainability mission, resulted in a 30% spike in sales after the campaign ran. Brand strategist Gina Dunn uses this as an example of how brutal clarity doesn't confuse customers — it aligns them with the brand's authentic values.
Gina Dunn suggests three reflection prompts: identify where you're watering down your message out of fear, determine the most honest thing you could say about what you do, and ask how your brand would show up if you let it be as bold as you truly are. Starting with these questions helps strip away the safe, scattered messaging that holds brands back.
Patagonia's sales spiked 30% after their 'Don't Buy This Jacket' campaign.
